It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and the temp was perfect. I went 1.5 miles in 18 minutes. It felt a little strange at first. The clothes were just a little uncomfortable and the shoes felt a little tight. After I got moving though it felt great. I missed having the time to myself. I realized how much I missed running. I am already plotting when I can fit in my next run. It might have to be on a treadmill but I am going to make it happen.

Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.4

My New Gratitude Journal

As I said in my last post I have been feeling a little Blah lately. That hasn't really changed, except that I am getting crabby as well. I know I need to change that so I am going to follow the lead set by some other bloggers and and blog what I am grateful for each day.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
1. I was doing really well for a while, but around mile 18 I didn't have too much left in me. From that point on the miles had a lot more walking then running, but I made it through. I was never so grateful to make the turn before the final bridge that led to the finish line. You hear the announcer saying, "You're a part of Chicago Marathon history! You're not just a runner, you're a finisher, you're a marathoner!" Heavens. I somehow had enough in me to take off like a crazy woman and run like mad to the finish line! My Dad would have been proud!

I wish I could find the words to capture the experience of running the Chicago Marathon. In some ways, it was absolutely enormous--important, life-changing, emotional. And at the very same time, it was just one foot in front of the other, trusting the training. I would do it again in a heart beat. I loved running through all the different neighborhoods, seeing all the crazy costumes and the people watching. It was fun running by the United Center, dissapointed I didn't see any of my Blackhawks there. :) I wish I could relive running by the crowds by Moody Church, they were the best at cheering and encouraging us along the way. I think we all need a cheering section like that in our lives.

Ben and Trinity (my husband and daughter) came in to watch along with my sister and her husband. My brother ran with me and we got to see them at the 5k mark and around mile 10. I think it helped knowing I was going to see them along the route. I only wish I could have seen them a little more, it was just too hot for poor Trinity. When we found them after the race, she was crying and hiding in the shade with my sister. I gave her my wet towel to wipe her face and she drank more of my Gatorade than I did. The priorities of a Mom coming before the priorities of running.

Afterwards, my Mom threw us a perfect party with pizza and cake. During the race all I wanted was an ice cold Coke and I finally got it there.

I was a little sore in my knee and and my back, but I was able to walk and required no BenGay :) he he.

Would I do it again? I would. It was a great experience, and I'm thankful for every step. Would I encourage someone else to do it? Absolutely yes. I knew it would be hard, and it was harder than I thought. But I knew it would be amazing, and it was even more amazing than I could have imagined.

I finished in 6:07:28. I was hoping I would have been a little faster, but it was impossible with the heat. I was just glad I finished though and hope to do better next year.

It's not too late to donate to Imerman Angels. If you can spare a few dollars please do so at www.firstgiving.com/stephanierea

Thank you to all of you for your kinds words of encouragment and support along the way. I couldn't have done it without you.

My Medal

Marathon update coming soon. I love you Daddy!
Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.0

Marathon Weekend Is Here!

I am on the train right now heading in to Chicago to go to the marathon expo. I have my oldest daughter T with me and we will be meeting my brother Jon downtown.
He says we will be at the expo for 4 hours! Seriously! 4 HOURS! I am thinking that is a little extreme, but he is the marathon expert. This will be his 12th. I am looking forward to being among fellow runners and getting my bib! Who knew I would get excited about a bib!

Anyways...I am ready for the race to begin. The nerves are starting though, I have little bit of a tummy ache and I keep worrying about all the minor details. T keeps telling me to take a deep breath and relax. I have used them on every training run and will use them on race day. I have been putting them in my giant pocket that attaches to my water belt. I don't plan on wearing the water belt since there are water stations, but wear do I put my blocks? Should I buy the race belt so I have a place to put the blocks or just wear the water belt. Then I can pass up the crazy busy water stops without worry.

Oh the silly questions a newbie marathoner asks! Would love some advice from the veterans if possible.

Now here is why I am not worried about the marathon...I know I haven't run the distance yet, but I have run 23 twice. Yesterdays 23 mile was partially done in heavy downpours and the last 9 miles I ran all by myself. If I can do that, I can do anything! Yesterday was a scheduled 26 mile run, but my husband called to say a storm was on the way and I decided to turn back early since the closest shelter was behind us and not in front of us. I am not a big fan of thunder and lightning so I didn't want to be out in the open during that part. Thankfully I made it to the highway and was able to stay under there during the thunder, a few other people from our training group were taking shelter there as well so I wasn't alone. I may have cried if that happened. Can I say again I really don't like thunder? After the scary part of the storm passed we went our separate ways (the others in my group hadn't reached their turn around point yet) and I continued the last 8 miles in pretty steady and sometimes heavy rain. My new shoes got soaked for the second week in a row and now they are not pretty anymore. :(
Today I am still feeling a little sore. I have some knee pain, but nothing too major. Looking forward to a short run in a couple of days. Hopefully the shoes will be dry by then.

17 Miles

Once again I have been missing in action...but I promise that I have been running.

Training is going well. I found a marathon training group that I meet with every Saturday morning and I am so glad that I found them. They get my butt out of bed and encourage me to keep on going.

This weekends run was 17 miles! Yesterday got rained out so we headed out this morning instead. I am happy to say I kept a pretty good pace and didn't feel too bad. Two weeks ago I had a 14 mile run and it was horrible. I wasn't able to keep up with the pace group. I ran alone most of the time and it really brought me down. It took me close to 3 hours to finish that day. Heading in to this weekend I was pretty nervous because of my performance on the 14 day. I decided to run with a minute slower pace group and that was the best decision I ever made.
I did pretty well during the run. I didn't feel too many aches and pains until I was around the 12 mile mark. I didn't get any cramps at all which amazed me! I have no idea if it was related to the new shot blocks I used today, but I think I am going to run out to the store and get some more of those!
I dropped my pace a little bit at the end and was able to push through. I just ran 13.1, what is another measly .9 miles? I think my doubt is in running it by myself, it kinda scares me.

That fear has motivated me to finally join the running club, the application is going out in tomorrow's mail. And I am going to save up to buy a forerunner. I can't keep mapping out these distances before hand. I mapped out a 7 mile out and back route on the trail and the 7 mile mark is at a great point where I can hopefully convince my husband to wait for me and give me some new supplies. I might have to send in my kids with the puppy dog eyes to ask him. :)

Happy Hump day!

The Adventures of a Running Mom

This past Sunday was my half marathon. I finished!! But I have to tell you the wonderful adventure it took to get there......

The weekend started about midnight on Saturday when I woke up to a crying two year old who was not feeling well at all. I only got a couple of hours sleep that night and ended up taking C to the doctor. She ended up having a huge ear infection and was put on some antibiotics. My husband was also not feeling well at the time and my 5 year old had a cold. After the doctor I took the miserable two year old to the pharmacy and then to my 5 year olds t-ball game because "I proooomisssed!" (Said by whiny 5 year old) After the game it was home for a half hour and then off to T's karate belt testing. Yeah!! She got her yellow belt! Then it was back home again to pack up the car and drive with T and N to Chicago. We left poor C and Daddy at home. :(

We made it to my sister's condo and discovered that N had a fever. Ugh! The sickness never ends! I fed him dinner right away and put him to sleep so I could walk to the store to get some infant tylenol for when he woke up. The rest of the night was pretty quite thankfully, T got to go swimming with her aunt and uncle and I got all of my running gear ready to go for the next morning.

Finally race day.......N had me up early, 4:30 am, to nurse and I wasn't able to fall asleep after that. I was getting antsy and was just ready to race. I got myself ready and left about 6:30.

It was a quick 5 minute walk to the race site and the park was filled with people. I took a walk around to start warming up (it was chilly) and found my way to the 11 minute pace sign. There I met some crazy wonderful people who all had different backgrounds and experiences. There was the two time ironman woman, the obnoxious 56 year old who yelled over her really loud music coming from her ipod, Chuck the pace leader that offered all kinds of advice and tips, Gary the sign holder that dropped it at mile 3 and then proceeded to sing Glory, Glory Alleluia and various other songs the rest of the way, and many others.

The race started and we set out at a good pace. I was going to run/walk the race but I was feeling good and kept going. I ran all the way to the turn around point!!! It felt great running along the lake. It was a long distance though and I felt like I was running all the way to Indiana (we could see it the first half of the race). Thankfully we didn't and we turned around and headed back to see the skyline of Chicago. It was a beautiful site and it motivated me to keep on going. I ditched the run 5 walk 2 minutes strategy. I always walked through the water stops and whenever I felt like it. Running the first half bought me alot of time to keep me on pace with my goal of 2.5 hours. I was feeling tired towards the end, but I kept pushing through and made it to the finish line. I had never run farther then ten miles before and I couldn't believe I made it 13.1!!! My official time was 2:28:35, under my goal time!

It was disappointing to not have anyone cheering me on, I knew my husband would have been there at the finish line, but my sister and brother in law were taking care of T and N and decided to walk around instead of waiting to see me cross the finish line. They took T to run the kids dash (if only I was a little bit faster I could have seen it!) and she will tell you that she finished 5th (more like 10th). She was so proud of her ribbon and took it with her to school today.

After we got back to the condo I called the husband and he told me that C had an allergic reaction to her antibiotic and had to get a new one. Oh joy! Oh and my husband has food poisoning. The fun never ends.

<span style="background-color: black; I didn't switch to the 10k, I am sticking with the half marathon. I know I can do it. This past Sunday I went on a 10 mile run and felt great! I would run 5 minutes and then walk 2. At the race I may run the entire first mile (I don't want to feel silly stopping to walk so soon), but then I will fall into my run/walk pattern. I am very excited about doing it! This week has been dragging, so I am trying to get myself to calm down and relax a bit. My daughter is really excited though too because she is running in the kids dash, so it has been a little hard to not be antsy for the weekend.

I have a made a list of what I need to pack and have laid out all my gels and gatorade that I like to run with. Saturday is going to be busy for us and I don't want to forget anything. Trinity has t-ball in the early afternoon and then after a short break she has to test for her yellow belt in karate. After that we will be able to drive to the city and enjoy a fun night visiting with my sister and brother in law. I am very fortunate that their condo building is directly in front of the park where the half marathon starts.

My goal for the race is 2:30. I will post my update as soon as I can after the race. It was the farthest I have ever run before!!!! I was quite proud of myself. It did take me forever though, it was very windy and there were lots of hills. I have to start going the other direction on the trail now so I can avoid all those hills. It was a nice route though, it goes through pine woods that are nice and shady. Perfect for the hot days!

I also had some pain in my right leg and ankle too, so I walked a lot of it. I didn't want to cause an injury. I ran a couple of times since then and the pain is still there. I have a 9 mile long run scheduled tomorrow but I think I need to skip it. I am sure I need to take a little time off. I was thinking about using the bike and the eliptical for a few days and then go out for a short run on Tuesday and see how it feels. Hopefully it is gone buy then. Next weekend I have a 10 mile long run. If the pain is gome by then, do I just go ahead and do the 10 miler even though I skipped the 9? What else can I do to make the ankle feel better? I honestly didn't think I would make the whole run, but the wind pushed me after the turn around point and I made great time. I was about 1 minute faster per mile this week than last week when I only ran 5 miles.

62 days until the half marathon and I am getting really excited. I am finally starting to feel like I will be ready for it. I think its because the weather is nicer and I don't have to run on the terrible treadmill anymore!! I am really excited, but I have to wait 248 days to actually run it. I am excited though, so hopefully that excitement will stay with me for the next 9 months.

The kiddies have slowly been getting better so I didn't feel too guilty going out for a run yesterday and today. Yesterday's run was only a mile on the treadmill and today was two miles outside. Both went pretty well (really how hard can 1 mile be?). I am proud of myself for getting out there though. I always look for excuses to skip a run and I didn't let myself do it. I adjusted my schedule to allow for a run today because I know I won't get the chance tomorrow and I know I need to do that more often. I won't be able to keep a consistent schedule, I will need to adjust with my schedule. Being a Mom of three kids I will need to do that often.

This weekend is a family trip to the Wisconsin Dells so there shouldn't be a problem getting Fridays run in. Sundays long run might have to be on a treadmill (oh the horror!). I am pretty sure there is more snow on the ground up there compared to here so I will have to see if I can find a clear running path.

Hapy Running!

Not Running

I have been a terrible runner lately! Last week I did not run at all and this week wasn't much better.
I think I have a decent excuse last week. I was sick for a couple of days and then we had my sons baptism on Sunday. I really intended on my long run on Sunday, but when I woke up and realized I still hadn't finished the cake, I knew I had to skip the run. I didn't feel too guilty as I ate all the yumminess! I need to learn how to post pics on here so you can see all the yummy chocolate that was on it.

By Monday the dog ate all the leftover cake and I was ready for a run. It has been frigid out here so I went to the gym and only ran 1.25 miles. It was packed, people were waiting, and I honestly did not feel like being there. I missed going outside for my run. I haven't had the chance to go back out for a run, with sick kids, work, and my husband having class at my normal run times, I couldn't make it. I feel terrible, I really do, but I will do my long run tomorrow. I don't care how cold it is, I will be outside. I just can't run 3 miles on a treadmill. It would be the end of me.

Since registration for the Chicago Marathon opens on Monday, my brother asked me if I was doing it with him and if I had the guts. I said yes to both and then asked him if he had the guts to run with a really slow runner. He won't be setting any PR's with me.

Well I need to go "run" now and be a Mom. This is my year to accomplish everything I didn't do last year.
Baby #3 was born on September 21st and after taking lots of time to recover (a little too much) I have started thinking about me and getting my running shoes back on. Here are my goals for the year.....

1.) By new running shoes. I did this one already. They are pretty, Nike Livestrong ones, I almost don't want to get them dirty. :) They are comfy though, and I have put a few miles on them already.

2.) Run a half marathon. This week I started a 19 week training program to get me there. It will be the Chicago Spring Half on May 16th. I am looking forward to it, but I am a little nervous about how close it is. I know the time will go by fast. The training program is for beginners and takes things slow. The long run this weekend is only 2 miles and I know I can do that. By the end of the month I will be up to 4 miles.

3.) Run the Chicago Marathon. I thankfully have 10 months to train, but I know I have to be serious about my training already. I have decided to run for a charity. I am debating between the American Cancer Society or Imerman Angels. I lost my Dad to cancer last year and my Husband's Uncle is very ill from cancer right now and would like to run in their honor.

4.) Enjoy running. This one will be more difficult then running a marathon.

Run on friends, I will let you know how my "long" run went on Sunday. :)

Almost There

23 days and counting! This baby will definetly be born on September 28th (I am having a c-section). I am so glad I am counting down the days now instead of weeks. The household is busy getting ready for the new baby, my girls are very excited to meet their new brother and I am excited just to be almost done.

My doctor and I already were talking about me getting back to running. He let me know I have only gained 25lbs with this pregnancy (yeah me!), so I wont have to worry about weight loss. I am already starting on planning my running routine. I will definitely be taking it slow. I am going to start with yoga and some short runs around the block a few weeks after the baby is born. Then I will just gradually add more as I feel ready. It stinks that I will be starting to run again in the fall. I dread the winter runs that will follow.

My sister asked me if I wanted to run the Hot Chocolate 5k in Chicago again, but it is the first week in November and I don't know if I want to deal with the hassle of carting a new baby in to the city. I haven't decided 100% yet though. They do have the best goodie bag ever and I wouldn't mind the new running jacket.

Anyways....time to get back to work. I hope everyone is training well and good luck to all of you running in the upcoming marathons!

Hanging in There

It has been forever again, but it is hard to post about running when I am the size of a whale. :) He he. The last two months have been a total blur for me. About a week after my last post my dad passed away from cancer. He had been sick about a month and it was only about 2 weeks after the diagnosis that he died. It sent the family into a tail spin, like we have all fallen off the earth. He was only 63, I always expected my Dad to live forever. It has been an adjustment to get used to not seeing him sitting in his favorite chair or seeing his Vietnam Veteran hat hanging by the fireplace and not on his head. But I am adjusting, one day at a time.

His death was two days before the Shamrock Shuffle, so needless to say, I didn't run it. And I pretty muched just stopped running. I wasn't in the mood for it at all but lately I have really been missing it. Really, really, really been missing it. But I don't know if I can just start up again. I am now 22 weeks pregnant (with my first boy!) and I feel great. The all day morning sickness is no more and things have been going really well.

The most activity I have been doing is walking. I think I might try out the eliptical a little bit, just start out slow so I don't cause any problems. What I really want to do though is run and I want to race. My brother has been asking me if I want to do Disney in January with him. I would really only have about 10 weeks to train though. And I would be training in December, not my idea of fun. I also know that I won't be able to run the whole thing with that short amount of training time. He says that I can always walk it, and I have always wanted to do Disney. But do I really want to walk my first marathon? Disney is more about the experience I think and I am all about that. I am a huge Disney fan!!! But I don't know, I really just don't know what to do.

A Little Running

I have run a little bit....not as much as I would like, but hey at least it is something. I still have the nauseau. I go to the doctor next week and maybe we can figure out what else to do. I will also be at 12 weeks on Sunday so maybe it will go away soon. It never lasted past the first trimester with my first two.

I am starting to get excited about the Shamrock Shuffle. I can't believe it is just over a week away! I know I won't be able to run the whole thing, so my goal is just to finish. My sister is being very supportive about it, she said she will walk with me, but I really hope she ditches me. She has been training hard and I don't want to slow her down. I am more excited about the expo the day before and bringing my oldest daughter to Chicago with me. She can't wait to go swimming in Aunt Stacy's pool. It will be a fun weekend. I am looking forward to it.

Checking In

The Ultrasound on Wednesday went well. I am 9 weeks along, so the due date is October 4. I still haven't been running. I have all day morning sickness and it is pretty rough right now. The last couple of days have been a teeny bit better, I started a different prenatal vitamin. I am hoping that it continues to help.
I have to get back in to running so I can do the 8k with my sister. I have been hesitant to run because I don't want to be away from home just incase the nausea creeps up. I will probably stick to the elliptical for now. I don't want to be completely lazy. Hopefully I will have enough time to prepare for the 8k.

A Bit of A Break

So it has been about two weeks since I last ran. I was really sick. It was a terrible cold followed by nauseau that would not go away. I couldn't move without thinking about getting sick, it was terrible. I had to go to the doctor, I just couldn't figure it out. Well, surprise!!! I'm pregnant again. It was totally unexpected so I never even thought of being pregnant when I was so nauseaus, but now it all makes sense.

I saw my OB yesterday and she ok'd running, she even encouraged it. I can't do the half marathon though. She doesn't want me to be training for any new distances, she just wants me to stick with what I already have done. So I will still do the 8k at the end of March, that I am excited about. I am still pretty sick, so I am not sure when I will head out on the road again. Maybe in a few days and I will probably start out with a short distance, just to see how I feel afterwards. I am grateful that I have an OB that doesn't mind that I run. I will keep you updated on how everything goes and whenever I get my next run in.

On Wednesday I get to go to my first ultrasound to see how far along I am. I can't wait to see that little dot on the screen. :)

Happy Running everyone!

Lazy, Excuse Maker, Whiner

Yep, that is all me. I didn't run at all this weekend. I was too lazy to run 8 miles. I didn't want to run 6 miles with the group because I knew no one would want to run as slow as me. I whined about running (in my head) all weekend. I used the excuse of how busy this weekend was also. I have to stop it! I am getting really bad.

I did hit the eliptical this morning. I really wish I had a treadmill at home. I also ran up and down the stairs 25 times (to help build my muscles for those hills) and I did some core work. I guess that is good right? I know its not enough to help me with the half marathon though. I have to run. I have to run. I have to run. (I keep repeating that to myself.) Ok, so I will stop whining out loud now. My next chance to run is Wednesday night. I will be talking myself in to it for the next two days.

Girls Night Out

I totally had the best run last night. It was about 3.5 miles and I ran with a group of girls from the local running store. We had a blast! It felt great to get out with other runners for a change. I have been a lonely runner lately. It was a nice change of pace. The soup they served afterwards was amazing also. I will share the recipe as soon as I get it. It was awesome!

Tomorrow I will be meeting up with the Saturday morning group. They run about 6 miles. My long run this weekend is 8, so I was thinking I might run the two miles there and have my hubby pick me up after the run. Hopefully that works out, but you never know since he has to drag the kids around with him. Plus I can very easily talk myself out of runs, so I will probably just drive there for the 6 miler and call it a day. I need to train with a drill sargent who will kick my butt. Yippee! Yippee!! I ran 7 miles. I can't believe it. I actually did it, and it was all on the treadmill. It was freezing once again. The temp was about 5 degrees and the wind chill was below zero. I had to get that long run in though. Thankfully my Mom has a treadmill and she wanted the whole family over for dinner. So I got my run in with a lot of distractions while on the treadmill. It made it so much easier. Now I only wish I could have those distractions when I run at the gym. :)

Next weekend 8 miles and the weather looks like it should be good. It was tough and I know that if I want to run farther I will need help. So, I already put on my calendar the next group run on Saturday so I make sure I get there. I will need help to go 7 miles.

Today I also drove about a 7 mile route that encompasses the last 6 miles or so of the March Madness half marathon. Holy Hills is all I can say! They are more like mountains. A couple are straight up, I might as well try running up a wall. This race is going to be really tough. I have to finish on 3 hours, which is a 13:45 pace. I don't know if I can do it.

I plan on running the 7 mile route a few times before the race, but are there any workouts I can do at home on my strength days to help prepare my legs for the hills? Any hill advice you can give will be greatly appreciated! Oh and any prayers. I think I will need that too.

6 Miles

I can't believe it. I actually ran 6 miles on Sunday. I won't lie though, it was hard. Really hard. It had snowed the day before so I was running on it. That was not easy. My entire body has been sore the last two days. I feel like I slipped on the snow, my back aches and my thighs hurt every time I take a step. I need to go 7 miles this weekend. I know the snow will still be around then. I think I will make friends with the treadmill because I tried to make friends with the snow and it just wasn't nice to me.

I Really Dislike Thinking of Titles

Ok, so I said I would be good and instead I was really bad. I blame the holidays and a warm week in Florida. I have been running though (not very long distances), but I have been running. Oh, and I signed up for two races. The March Madness half marathon on March 15 and the Shamrock Shuffle 8k on March 29th.

I have 9 weeks until the half marathon. I am going to revamp my training schedule that I am on so I can make sure I finish the race. I was originally going to add 1 mile to my long run each week, but that will leave me no time to taper and I want to make sure I am strong for the race. I think I might add 1.5 miles per week and then hopefully I can taper properly for it. My goal for the half is just to finish. As of right now I really have doubts that I will.

On that note, my biggest supporter, my brother Jon is running the Diney World marathon this weekend. Go Jon Go! I wish I was there with you.

I promise to be good

Yes, I have been a bad little blogger. Life is crazy, but I have been running. I just haven't been writing about it.

Today I ran 5 miles, my farthest distance ever. It was a great run and 5 hours later I still feel great. The knees hurt a lttle bit, but I think I just need to get off my bum and walk around more. I know that getting into longer distances is going to require some help. So I emailed a local running club about having a test run with them and I hope to hear back from them soon.

It has been a little harder getting out to run lately. I am an outside runner. I am not a fan of the treadmill. It gets dark so early now though so I really have no choice, thankfully I can do my long runs outside. I really don't think I could have run 5 miles on a treadmill. It would have been dreadful.

Also, my brother encouraged me to join athlinks.com. Have any of you joined? The site keeps track of all the races you have run and you can track friends and even rivals. I look forward to more races being entered on my page. I only have 3 races right now. If any of you join and want to be friends on the site just let me know.

Ok, well I should get moving now before my legs fall asleep. I promise to be good about writing more. No more bad blogger for me.

Kids and Running

Last weekend I ran in the Hot Chocolate 5k. I did pretty decent for having a bad cold. 33:44, faster than my last 5k.

What bugged me though was when I was looking at the results. Now first let me say I have no problem with older kids running. I think its a great family thing you can do together as long as you are not having your kid run a marathon. My problem was the results for the 5 year old girl. Come on, she is still a little girl! My four year old loves to "run" with Mommy. She usually runs a few blocks and then she is ready to sit in the jogging stroller. I can't imagine her running 3 miles. Maybe I am just picky, but I think 5 is too young for a race. (Especially when it costs $40).

Tomorrow is the Girls on the Run 5K. I am super excited and can't wait to help someone finish their goal. I know it will be fun, just really cold. Hopefully it doesn't snow.

Running and Coughing

My dreaded October cough is here. You can set your clock to it, every October and March I get the worse cough ever!! I get huge coughing fits and I can't sleep at night because all I am doing is coughing.

I am especially sad about it this year because tomorrow I run the Hot Chocolate 5k. Thankfully I only signed up for the 5k, I almost did the 15k. The race is in Chicago, so my daughter and I are taking the train in to spend the night at my sisters condo. She is running it with me. I have given up on getting a PR for this race. My sister has a goal of 45 minutes so I will probably just run/walk with her. I haven't run in a week and I am soooooo tired. Hopefully all the chocolate at the end of the race will make my cough go away. I am also glad that the weather will be nice. The weather should be in the 50's.

Any advice on getting rid of this cough would be greatly appreciated!!

I've been tagged

Thanks for tagging me Jenn. I am constantly thinking of training and planning when I should go and run. I am running tonight and I am ansty. It can't come soon enough. I found a 20 week plan to start training for a half marathon in March. I will start the last week of October.

The March madness Half Marathon is a hilly course in Cary, IL. The running club that puts it on begins training runs on the route in March. I am thinking about joining so I can get used to the hills. After that race I will begin my mileage for the marathon next year. I still can't believe I have a greed to do the race. Part of me is scared, but I am also excited. I hope that I can make it.

Fundraiser Widget

I can't understand why my goal widget for my breast cancer walk says zero. What a crazy day it was. It was hot again, but thankfully not as humid as last year and I think the city was a little more prepared. I still think they should start earlier, but next year it may be really cold and I will probably say it should start later.

My brother did well. He was feeling a little under the weather and finished in 4:22, still faster than last year. We chased him around the city and actually saw him once. It was exciting to see thousands of runners and it made me want to be a part of them. I promised my brother I would run next year. I think I am going to have to join a running club though, otherwise I will never be able to get through long runs, plus I have no idea how to train for a marathon so a club will help me with that too.

I signed up for the hot chocolate 5k on November 2 in Chicago. I have been a terrible runner. I didn't run for two and a half weeks, plain laziness. I ran Thursday for the first time and I could only go 1.5 miles. I was planning on doing a 10k on October 26th and I am in no way ready.

My running brother sent my daughter one of those blow up #1 fingers so she can cheer me on at my races. It made me feel guilty and that is why I ran on Thursday. He will be in town next weekend for the Chicago Marathon. I am jealous, I wish I could run with him, but I need more training. Maybe I could run next year with him. I know I need to set a goal and maybe if he holds me accountable I will keep up with the running. I am just so good with excuses.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

In October I am particpating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. I ran with C for about 2.5 miles and then she told me to go and finish. She was struggling a bit and didn't want to slow me down. I was able to run strong at the end because we took most of the race slow and we even took a pit stop at a friends house for some water and pictures. I finished in 34:41!! C finished at 37:18.

I didn't realize how much fun a race would be. The excitement of all the other runners and just being around all of those people who love to do what you do. I look forward to another race.

I am thinking about a 10k in October, but I know I will need a running partner. C doesn't plan on running longer distances than what she already has. So I will need to find someone else. On Saturday mornings the local running store has a running club, but I admit I am nervous about going. Its intimidating to me. I will probably call the store first to get more info and then decide what to do. I know I need the motivation from other people to keep myself going. It is hard by myself.

Its Race Day!

I am super excited tonight is my first race! I am sure I can get my husband to rub it for me when he gets home from work. I don't think it will effect my race, but I am searching the internet for ideas on what to do. I have been busy trying to train and enjoy my kids before the first day of school, which is today. So the crazy race of life has started today and on Friday is my first 5K. I am looking forward to it. I am guessing my time will be around 35 minutes. I think that is pretty good for a first timer. I didn't get the chance to run yesterday until late, so I went to the gym and ran on the treadmill. I went 2.99 miles in 33 minutes. I didn't want to go the whole 3.1 miles, because I am saving that for the race.

I am taking two days of rest and then I will be super fast on Friday. I had no running buddy, C is on vacation. I found an excuse to get out of my Monday run. I was so tired so I said I couldn't run because my running gear was dirty. I do have other things I can wear, but I was lazy that day. I decided to run Tuesday instead, but of course I didn't.
Wednesday I had to run. I spent the day at my Mom's and on the car ride home (a one hour drive) we got hit by a nasty storm. It was pitch black in the middle of the afternoon. The rain was coming down very hard and we got pelted with one inch hail. I was waiting for the windows to break as my two girls screamed in the back of the car. We were about 15 minutes from home and it was the longest ride ever. My nerves were so rattled and I needed to let go of all the stress. It is hard to be strong for your kids when you are as nervous as they are. I went to the gym to run on the treadmill and it was my best workout yet. I felt great when I was done and I thought I could run another half hour more. Of course on the way home from the gym I got hit by another strong storm, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the first one.

Friday I ran around the neighborhood. There is a park in our neighborhood that I always tell myself I should bring the girls to, but I never had the motivation to run there. I always thought it was too far. Well, I decided to run that direction and guess what. I ended my 7 minutes at the park. I couldn't believe how close it was. I realized that I need to just stop worrying about how far something is and just do it. In the end I know I will always be surprised.
The joy of reaching the park though quickly diminished though as I started to feel fatigued. I had to really slow down and just take my time. My head was spinning by the time I got home from my run. I couldn't get in the cold shower fast enough. I don't think I drank enough before I ran and it really effected my workout. I have been drinking water all day today so it doesn't effect tonights run.

On Monday C will be back in town. Yeah!!! I hate running by myself.

Training Has Started

So, I finally decided to get serious about this running thing. Before I would sporadically go out for runs, but I found myself a running partner and now I go more regularly because I have someone else counting on me. We have been running for about three weeks now and I must admit I love how it feels after a run.

My running partner, I will call her C, hasn't run in FOREVER so we have to go slow. I found a great run/walk program and convinced her to do a 5K with me. C isn't adjust to well, she is sore alot, but I am proud of her because she keeps on plugging away. Next week she is on vacation so I am crossing my fingers that she will go out for her runs. I convinced my husband to go on my runs with me next week. We will be out for our first run tomorrow. I hope he can run five minutes straight.

Tomorrow is run 5 minutes, walk 2.5 minutes, times 4. Next week is run 7 minutes, walk 3 times 3. We will see how it goes.
